Islam in Japan and Our Respective Cultural Identities

Nov 22, 2025 · H. Maqsood Ahmed

The history of Islam in Japan started around 120 years ago when a large group of Turkish Muslims made a largely failed attempt to visit the country to salute the nation for an earlier  visit by the Prince Akihito of that time. According to some statistics, the number of Muslims living in Japan whether they be Japanese or foreigners is around 100,000.  These Muslims are mainly foreign migrants who initially came to Japan to look for jobs etc. As the workforce of first generation Muslims  is entering into their forties and fifties, it is time for us to give a serious thought to the cultural identities these Muslims bring from their respective countries and regions and their relevance in a multi-cultural environment in which they are living currently in various parts of Japan.
